Don’t Buy the Watch. Buy the Seller. Essential checklist before you pay
When it comes to luxury watches, especially pre-owned, the biggest risk is actually...who you’re buying it from.
In today’s market, there are thousands of listings, sellers, and marketplaces. But not all of them are created equal.
Scams are more common than most people realize, and even well-meaning sellers can unknowingly pass along frankenwatches, poor service histories, or inflated prices.
That’s why one of the most important rules in watch buying is simple:
Don’t buy the watch. Buy the seller.
Here’s what that actually means — and how to protect yourself:
✅ 1. Reputation is everything - A seller who has something to lose is far less likely to risk their reputation over a bad deal.
- Does the seller have a name, brand, or business presence online?
- Can you find Google reviews, Instagram, a website, or LinkedIn?
- Are they known in collector communities or watch forums?
✅ 2. Transparency builds trust - If anything feels vague, rushed, or evasive — that’s your cue to walk away.
- Are they upfront about condition, service history, and any flaws?
- Do they clearly show photos and offer full details about box/papers, reference numbers, and authenticity?
- Do they educate you, or pressure you?
✅ 3. Communication matters - A good seller treats this like a relationship, not a transaction.
- Will they hop on a video call to show you the watch live?
- Are they easy to reach and willing to answer your questions in detail?
- Do they offer a professional invoice, payment options, or escrow?
✅ 4. Real sellers offer real support - Buying from someone who’s in it for the long term will be there for you in a pinch like the inevitable servicing or securing that last minute gift.
- Do they stand behind their watches post-sale?
- Can they assist with sizing, servicing, or future trade-ins?
- Are they there for the long haul, or disappearing after the payment clears?
✅ 5. You’re not just buying steel and gears - You’re buying peace of mind, confidence, and credibility.
That’s why working with the right seller is just as important as choosing the right watch.
